I’ve enlisted my lil’ bro, Olav to start work on some music for my film. Here is a quick track he sent me after I sent him a couple references. It’s a great starting point. I’m into the drumbeat, and the guitar works nicely. I’ve warned Olav not to get too folky because, given the mountain and forest setting, that musical genre is too familiar and expected. Perhaps in a different film this would work, but this film’s juxtaposition of natural scenery and odd, flat characters is asking for a sound that is a bit off.

There is a lot of dialogue in the film, and so the music has to be able to retreat to the background when needed. A steady hand-drumbeat is perfect for this. The drum carries with it a “tribal” connotation, and in a film which is all about “tribes” or in this case teams it fits well. The culturally elevated “team”, or “sport” are just constructs put in place to allow ourselves to act, or justify our acting in aggressive and divisive ways. The drumbeat then works to clarify that “primal tribes” and celebrated “teams” are one in the same. I have asked Olav to play around with some electronic sounds as a way to modernize it, add some surprise, and give it the artificiality that the visuals and storyline address.

I need to keep budgets low, so he’ll be a massive help if we can work out some nice tunes. Plus, I can contact him at almost anytime, and we have similar points of reference when discussing the type of sound we’re going for!

These are the stars of the stories below. Seagull Boy, Harriet, Rapunzel, Banana, the slug-man, and Tor all seem to be variations on a naive, super-positive character. Fashion Ghost is a reoccurring character who has a tendency to be self-absorbed, rude, and vain. The Bladder also leans towards this type of personality. Randy is nervous, submissive, and hard to like, and once again appears in several stories. Red Monster, Banana, and Rapunzel all find themselves in conflict with social pressures concerning their gender, and the slug-man, Banana, and Seagull Boy are characters who must deal with being ostracized by a group. At least half of these stories have themes that deal with conformity. There is also discussions about consumer culture and religion. All in all, this exercise is proving to be buttz and isn’t really helping me with anything… I can see there are several themes and characters that I seem to be returning to in these stories, and whether this is good or bad is still up for debate. Much more importantly is the way in which I choose to present these themes and characters, so that they still feel fresh and interesting, and taking such an analytical approach is sure to produce something stale.
